Put to the Test: We Dropped a Pixel 8 From a Second Floor and Ran It Over

Testing by Android Central confirms that high-end phone cases from brands like Poetic can protect a Google Pixel 8 from 20-foot drops and the weight of a seven-passenger MPV, though extreme pressure can still cause internal glass damage. The results suggest that “military grade” and “heavy-duty” marketing claims often align with actual device survival in high-impact scenarios.

Namerah Saud Fatmi of Android Central conducted a series of stress tests on a $699 Pixel 8 using four different cases: the Poetic Revolution, Dbrand Grip Case, Quad Lock MAG Case, and BURGA Tough Case. The testing aimed to verify whether industry terms like impact absorption and military grade provide measurable protection or serve as marketing buzzwords.

Military Grade Standards and Initial Drop Results

The testing began with a comparison of protection claims. According to Android Central, the Poetic Revolution guarantees 20-foot military-grade drop protection, while the BURGA and Quad Lock cases promise general everyday protection against bumps and drops. Dbrand claims its Grip Case offers military-grade impact resistance but does not provide specific distance figures.

To establish a baseline, Fatmi dropped the cases face-first from five feet onto hard tiled floors. All four cases survived the test without damage to the device. This height exceeds the standard described by case maker SUPCASE, which states that military-grade qualification involves 26 drops from four feet onto a plywood surface over a concrete base with steel backing.

High-Altitude and Extreme Pressure Testing

The Poetic Revolution case underwent more aggressive testing due to its 20-foot protection claim. Fatmi dropped the Pixel 8 from the second floor of a building. Following the impact, the case detached from the phone, but the device remained fully functional without cracks or scratches, though a small dent appeared on the camera bar.

The final test involved driving a seven-passenger MPV over the phone while it was encased in the Poetic Revolution shell. According to the report, the phone remained operational immediately after the event, with the touchscreen, cameras, microphone, and speakers all functioning normally.

However, upon removing the case, Fatmi discovered spiderweb-like cracks across the bottom part of the Pixel 8’s glass back. This indicates that while the case prevented total device failure and screen breakage under extreme weight, it could not fully negate the pressure exerted by a vehicle.

Scratch Resistance and Hardware Durability

Prior to the drops, the cases were tested for scratch resistance by placing the phone in a bag with metal keys and a power bank. Fatmi reported that the scratch-proof claims for the backs of the cases were accurate.

The Poetic Revolution was the only case in the group to provide a built-in screen guard. Other cases relied on the phone’s own screen protector to prevent scratches during the agitation test. Fatmi noted that the Poetic case was the most difficult to remove, resulting in a cracked fingernail during the process.

The tests were conducted in ambient temperatures reaching 45°C (113°F). Despite the glass back cracking during the vehicle test, the Pixel 8 maintained its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and charging capabilities.
