Putin: The war in Ukraine is a matter of life and death for Russia

(AFP, Moscow, 18th) Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an exclusive interview broadcast today that what happens on the battlefield in Ukraine is linked to Russia’s “life and death” and may even determine her destiny

Putin said: “For them (the West) everything that happens on the front line in Ukraine is just a matter of improving their tactical position, but for us it is a matter of our own destiny, a matter of life and death.”

The Kremlin has repeatedly described the almost two-year military conflict between Russia and Ukraine as a struggle for Russian survival to appeal to patriotic feelings among the people, who are indifferent to the invasion.

“I believe that understanding the way we think is still important not only for us, but especially for our listeners and viewers abroad,” Putin said in an exclusive interview with state television .

Putin’s response was in response to his recent two-hour interview with American talk show host Tucker Carlson, which the Kremlin also used to promote its version of the conflict.

In an exclusive interview with Carlson, Putin spoke at length about Russian history and constantly questioned Ukraine’s national status, drawing the ire of Kyiv and Western countries.

When Putin was asked about his opinion on Russian history in Carlson’s interview, he replied: “For Western listeners and viewers, it is not easy (to understand), and it is even more difficult for Americans.”

Putin said: “The history of the United States is only 300 years old, and I started (telling the history of Russia) in 862 AD. So I think it is not easy for American audiences to understand.”
