Putin Offers Iran-Israel Mediation Amid Rising Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to mediate between Iran and Israel, amid growing concerns that escalating tensions could lead to a wider regional conflict. putin acknowledged the situation’s complexity but expressed optimism that a solution could be found, though he stressed that the decision rests with the political leadership of both nations.
“We are not imposing anything,” Putin said, outlining his vision for a potential resolution. “The decision, of course, is up to the political leadership of all these countries, primarily Iran and Israel.”
Putin declined to speculate on Russia’s response to a hypothetical assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by Israel. Khamenei has rejected U.S. calls for de-escalation amid ongoing Israeli military actions, warning Washington against direct involvement, which he said would result in “irreparable damage.”
Putin’s offer to mediate between iran and Israel was reportedly raised during a phone call with then-U.S. president Donald Trump. Trump, however, dismissed the idea. “I said, ‘Do me a favor, mediate your own,’” Trump stated, a shift from earlier comments where he seemed open to Russian involvement.
Putin also highlighted Russia’s nuclear cooperation with iran, including the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, where over 200 Russian workers are assisting in building additional reactors. He added that Russia has provided security assurances to Israel regarding the Iranian nuclear program, stating, “We agreed with the Israeli leadership that their security will be ensured.”
While Russia has supplied some air defense systems to Iran, Putin clarified that a thorough air defense network was offered but declined by Tehran. Israel has claimed to have neutralized some of Iran’s Russian-made S-300 systems during airstrikes.
Addressing questions about Russia’s airstrikes in Ukraine, Putin defended the operations, stating that they targeted military industries, not residential areas. This comes as AP reporters have documented civilian casualties in Kyiv. Putin reiterated Russia’s goal of “demilitarizing” Ukraine, either through negotiation or military action.
