Pyongyang’s Power Play: How North Korea is Outmaneuvering the US at Every Turn
The Decline of the Western Bloc and the Rise of New Global Powers
The international status of the Western bloc, led by the United States, is declining. The unipolar system in which the United States was at the top is collapsing, and America’s global hegemony is rapidly disappearing.
The United States’ Attempt to Reverse the Trend
The United States is trying hard to reverse this trend. From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, when Eastern Europe collapsed and the Soviet Union was dissolved, capital from capitalist countries, including the United States, poured into Russia and Eastern Europe. This exploitation occurred in Russia and Eastern Europe, similar to what happened in South Korea after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) crisis in 1997.
The Ukrainian War and the United States’ Plan to Destroy Russia
The US is currently planning something similar. It wants to destroy and exploit Russia and China. This will help the US economy and benefit its allies. When the war in Ukraine broke out on February 24, 2022, President Biden announced economic sanctions against Russia on March 26, boasting that “the Russian economy will be reduced by half in the coming years.”
The United States completed its sanctions against Russia a month before the outbreak of the war and formed a tight blockade with the so-called “Like-minded Countries (LMN)” including the Group of Seven (G7), the European Union (EU), Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. In the short term, the goal was to deplete Russia’s war resources while blocking its access to advanced technologies such as semiconductors and weakening its military power. In the long term, the goal was to break the Russian economy and shrink its size by 30-50% compared to before the war.
The Failure of the United States’ Plan and the Rise of Russia
However, the results were just the opposite. At first, the Russian economy certainly seemed to be shaky. Interest rates were rising, and the exchange rate was fluctuating. But it soon stabilized, and as Europe turned the natural gas it had blocked to China and India, economic growth actually surpassed the G7, leading to a reversal. As Russia’s neighbors and the BRICS took the roundabout route to avoid sanctions against Russia, they also made profits.
On the other hand, the US allies, including Europe and countries that joined the US sanctions against Russia, suffered a severe economic blow. In particular, the overall price increase due to the surge in energy prices increased the suffering of ordinary people.
The Role of North Korea in the Ukrainian War
The claim that North Korean weapons are being sent to Russia first appeared on September 5, 2022. It was a report that declassified U.S. intelligence stated that Russia had purchased millions of North Korean shells and rockets. However, at the time, the issue was more about Iranian drones than North Korean shells. It was also analyzed that North Korean weapons were old and would not be useful in actual combat. North Korea denied exporting weapons to Russia.
Since then, the United States has regarded North Korea’s provision of Russian weapons as a fait accompli and has repeatedly condemned them, increasingly treating North Korean weapons as a key variable in the Ukrainian war.
The China Blockade and the Role of North Korea
The presidents of the United States claim that their economy is suffering because of China and that the United States can survive only if the Chinese economy collapses. In doing so, they started the US-China economic war and pressured the world to join in blocking the Chinese economy. They especially focused on blocking the semiconductor industry.
However, blocking the Chinese economy was impossible because China had already become the world’s factory and was the number one trading partner for most countries. Many countries continued to trade with China while keeping an eye on the United States, and even American semiconductor companies were using their brains to avoid government regulations in order to maintain trade with China.
If the United States wants to do as it pleases, there is no other way than war. Just as it used the war in Ukraine as an excuse to stop importing Russian natural gas from Europe, if China invades Taiwan, it can force countries around the world to blockade China.
However, North Korea holds back the United States. In order for China to lose the Taiwan War, no one should help China. However, the United States believes that even if all the countries in the world turn their backs, only North Korea will side with China. In particular, North Korea is close to China, so it can be supported militarily.
The Taiwan War and the Korean War
Recently, the United States has been openly demanding that if a war breaks out in Taiwan, not only the US forces in Korea but also South Korea should participate or support. However, there are also claims that this is not easy. Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, who designed the 2018 National Defense Strategy, emphasized that “in the event of a Taiwanese emergency, South Korea should also focus on direct defense against Chinese attacks.”
Former National Security Office Director Kim Sung-han argued in a column in the Chosun Ilbo on April 9 that “if the US military in Korea takes military action following the US military in Japan in the event of a Taiwan Strait incident, a ‘power vacuum’ on the Korean Peninsula is inevitable,” and that “if China invades Taiwan, the possibility of North Korea’s provocation will rapidly increase.”
According to the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance between North Korea and China, if war breaks out between one country, the other country will “provide military and other assistance with all its might and without delay.” Therefore, if war breaks out in Taiwan, North Korea will immediately come to its aid.
Conclusion
The Ukrainian War and the Taiwan War are key means for the United States to prevent the collapse of the unipolar system. However, both are blocked by North Korea. However, the United States cannot directly attack North Korea. Since North Korea declared the completion of its nuclear force in November 2017, American officials have been losing sleep over the threat of a nuclear attack on the mainland. North Korea, which is destroying America’s global strategy step by step, has become the largest actor in international relations.
