Queensland Police were called to an apartment complex at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane shortly before noon on Friday, September 25, 2026, following the discovery of a body. Officers cordoned off the entrance to an underground carpark where a garbage truck was parked after the remains were reportedly found inside a bin. The incident marked the third sudden-death investigation opened across the state within a 24-hour window.
Surat Medical Distress Investigation
The sequence of investigations began just after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, when an 84-year-old man was found unresponsive at a home in Surat, located 450 kilometers west of Brisbane. Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Matthew Vanderbyl stated that other people at the home began driving the man to a nearby hospital due to the advanced state of his medical distress.
On the way to hospital, they were met by the ambulance and CPR was commenced … and the gentleman was then subsequently transported to the hospital in Surat.

The man, who was a long-term resident of the town of 400 people, died shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Police initiated an intensive inquiry to determine the cause, declaring both the property and the vehicle as crime scenes because the death was initially unexplained. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Friday afternoon, which police indicated would serve as the key point in their inquiries alongside interviews with people who were at the home.
Bellbird Park Fatal House Fire
In the third incident, neighbours alerted emergency services to a fire at a vacant two-storey home in Bellbird Park, west of Brisbane, at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026. Assistant Commissioner Vanderbyl noted that reports of a smell of petrol led authorities to treat the incident as a suspicious fire. The intensity of the blaze prevented emergency services from entering the structure, prompting a police guard on the scene overnight. A search of the property on Friday morning led to the discovery of a body. Police stated they were seeking CCTV footage from homes in the area to help identify the individual and notify their family.
