Queensland Rail has extended scheduled track closures in south-east Queensland, prolonging disruptions to the rail network through April 30, 2026. The closures, which were originally set to run from April 3 to April 26, are part of a broader effort to deliver multiple infrastructure projects intended to improve the state’s rail network.
The extension follows a period of disruptions that have been described as chaotic
for passengers. The timing of these works has faced scrutiny as Queensland households continue to deal with high fuel prices.
Impacted Lines and Service Changes
For the weekend of April 11 and 12, 2026, no trains will operate on the Gold Coast or Beenleigh lines. Major track works will also affect several other lines, including:
- Airport
- Caboolture
- Doomben
- Redcliffe Peninsula
- Shorncliffe
- Sunshine Coast
Translink has notified passengers that the best travel options for their commutes may change throughout April. The agency has urged commuters to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time.
Buses are replacing trains during these closure periods. Translink has specified that bikes and personal mobility devices are prohibited on these buses, unless the bike is folded in a bag no larger than 90x70x36 centimetres.
Infrastructure Drivers and Project Scope
Queensland Rail stated that the closures are necessary to allow projects to be undertaken safely and efficiently
as part of the goal of building a better rail network for Queensland
.

According to Translink, these significant extended closures are linked to major infrastructure works. Specific projects cited include the Cross River Rail and the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail projects.
The rail authority maintains that full access to the tracks is required for technical reasons and to ensure the safety of workers during the delivery of these mega transport projects.
Long-Term Planning and Maintenance
To assist with planning, Translink provides a six-month overview of significant extended track closures affecting weekdays. However, this tool is limited to major projects and does not include routine maintenance, night works, or unplanned disruptions caused by weather or technical issues.
For a more comprehensive view, event planners are directed to the Queensland Rail 12-month calendar to avoid clashes with weekend maintenance works.
The rail network’s current state of disruption extends beyond the metropolitan area, with reports indicating that freight train closures have also been extended for regional Queensland.
