Judge Denies R. Kelly Prison Release Amid Murder Plot Allegations

Updated June‍ 20, 2025

R. Kelly’s emergency request to be released from prison‍ to home confinement has been denied by a‍ federal judge. The disgraced R&B star, Robert Sylvester Kelly, sought release from the north Carolina jail, alleging prison officials were orchestrating ⁤a murder-for-hire scheme against him. This follows his recent hospitalization for a suspected ⁤drug overdose.

Kelly, 58, is currently serving a 30-year sentence on various sex crime charges. Judge Martha Pacold ruled Thursday that the request was brought to the wrong court, lacking jurisdiction over the matter. “kelly is currently housed at FCI Butner, wich is located in Butner, North Carolina – outside this judicial district,” pacold said.”Kelly has not demonstrated a legal basis for this court’s jurisdiction. Accordingly, his emergency ⁢motion… is denied.”

Beau Brindley, Kelly’s attorney,‍ expressed disappointment but not surprise. “we are not surprised by this ruling as we knew‍ that technical jurisdiction would be a challenge under these circumstances,” Brindley said. “Though, we had no choice but to act immediately given explicit evidence of a threat to Robert Kelly’s life.” The⁢ legal team is exploring other avenues for his safety adn potential‍ release.

According to court documents, Kelly woke up on June 13 experiencing vision problems and collapsed. The filing alleges prison staff administered an “overdose quantity” of medication the previous day, leading to his ⁣hospitalization ⁣at Duke University Hospital. He ⁤was then abruptly ⁣removed from the hospital by officers.

Kelly also claimed federal prison officials conspired to have him killed by a ⁣member of the Aryan Brotherhood.Mikeal Glenn stine allegedly told Kelly his life was in danger. Federal ‍prosecutors dismissed these allegations as a self-promotional tactic, stating,⁤ “Kelly refuses to accept responsibility for years of sexually abusing children.”

The R&B star was ⁣convicted in Chicago in 2022 on childhood pornography charges and in ⁤New York in 2021 on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. ⁣He is serving these sentences concurrently.

What’s ⁤next

Kelly’s legal team is expected to pursue other‍ legal avenues to address⁢ the alleged threats to his life and ⁣perhaps seek a⁣ transfer to a different facility.
