Rain Postpones Doosan Bears’ Record-Breaking Winning Streak Match Against KIA Tigers

Doosan Bears and KIA Tigers Match Postponed Due to Rain

By Yang Jeong-woong

Gwangju, South Korea – The highly anticipated match between Doosan Bears and KIA Tigers has been postponed due to heavy rainfall. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) made the announcement earlier today, stating that the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League game scheduled at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on July 22nd has been canceled.

With the country currently experiencing the rainy season, the Gwangju area was forecasted to be hit by rain throughout the day. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that the rain would persist even during the match, ultimately leading to the decision to cancel. Unfortunately, this marks the 13th time that KIA has faced a rain cancellation this season.

This rain delay is not welcomed by the Doosan Bears either. The team was on a remarkable winning streak, having secured ten consecutive victories, including a 5-2 win in their previous game. If they were to win the postponed match, they would have achieved an unprecedented 11 consecutive wins, surpassing the club’s previous record.

Doosan’s coach, Lee Seung-yeop, is also eying a personal milestone. The current record for the most consecutive wins by a first-year manager in the KBO League stands at 11 wins, achieved by Jerry Royster in 2008 when he was coaching the Lotte Giants. Coach Lee was determined to challenge this record, but unfortunately, the rain has delayed his pursuit.

The starting pitchers for both teams, Gwak Bin (Doosan) and Thomas Panoni (KIA), are expected to take the mound when the game is rescheduled on the 23rd.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced that the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League match between Doosan Bears and KIA Tigers, scheduled to be held at the Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on the 22nd, has been canceled due to rain.

In the middle of the rainy season that hit the country recently, there was a forecast that it would rain in the Gwangju area from this afternoon. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast, it was forecast to rain even after the match started in Gwangju, so the decision to cancel was eventually made. As a result, KIA suffered the 13th rain cancellation.

Even from Doosan’s point of view, the rain on this day is not very pleasant. Doosan, who won 5-2 in the game the day before, sprinted to 10 consecutive victories, setting a record for the most consecutive victories in the club’s history. If you add one win in the next game, Doosan will be the first to record 11 wins in a row.

Coach Lee Seung-yeop (47) will also set a record. The most consecutive wins by a first year manager in the current KBO League was 11 consecutive wins by coach Jerry Royster (then Lotte Giants) in 2008, and this manager decided to challenge this. However, due to the rain, this challenge was also pushed back a day.

Meanwhile, Gwak Bin (Doosan) and Thomas Panoni (KIA), who were the starting pitchers for both teams that day, were expected to start the game on the 23rd as well.
