Raleigh police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle accident involving Linwood Phillips, a 48-year-old man from Cary who had been reported missing earlier in the week.
Officers responded to reports of a vehicle off the roadway around 4:30 p.m. On April 6, 2026. Police located the vehicle, which had gone down an embankment and overturned at the off-ramp from I-40 westbound to Wade Avenue.
Phillips was found dead at the scene. According to investigators, he was still wearing his seat belt inside the vehicle.
Crash Investigation Details
A preliminary investigation by Raleigh police determined that the vehicle was traveling at a minimum of 70 mph when it left the roadway. The car went airborne before landing upside down in the woods.
Police stated that the force of the collision caused severe intrusion into the driver’s cabin
. Due to the extent of the damage, authorities believe Phillips died on impact.
Phillips, a rideshare driver, had been reported missing from Cary on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
The vehicle accident remains under investigation by the Raleigh Police Department, while the Cary Police Department is investigating the missing person case.
