WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Los Angeles Rams recently concluded a mandatory minicamp in Maui, emphasizing team connection and giving back to a community still recovering from devastating wildfires. Receiver Puka Nacua, whose polynesian background resonates deeply in hawaii, received a warm welcome upon arrival.
Head coach Sean McVay stressed the importance of connection during the trip, both within the team and with the local community. Approximately 500 people, including players, coaches, staff, and family members, participated in the Maui minicamp.
The Rams’ relationship with Hawaii spans decades. The team broadcast preseason games in the islands starting in 2018 and played a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys in Honolulu in 2019. Discussions about holding the minicamp in Maui began last offseason with the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Following the August 2023 wildfires, the Rams dedicated a preseason game to raise funds for American Red Cross relief efforts. Team president Kevin Demoff noted the community’s eager welcome. Quarterback Matthew Stafford expressed his enjoyment of the experience and openness to continuing the Maui minicamp in future years.
During the minicamp, Rams players engaged in community outreach. Offensive players ran a girls’ flag football camp, while the defense hosted a boys’ tackle football clinic.Davante Adams, who participated in the flag football camp, said he enjoyed connecting with the kids and bringing positivity to the community.

Adams noted the strong camaraderie within the rams association,which he felt integrated into more quickly than with his previous team. Demoff pointed to various team-bonding activities, such as players swimming together and participating in a luau, as evidence of the trip’s success in strengthening team unity. The Rams hope this bond will provide a foundation for the upcoming season.
Nacua’s popularity was evident throughout the minicamp. He received a roaring ovation from the crowd at War Memorial Stadium. Nacua cited Marcus Mariota, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Troy Polamalu as Polynesian players he admired growing up.
“I’m having a blast,” Nacua said. “And it doesn’t feel real sometimes that people are wearing my jersey, but I hope that they carry the things that are part of our culture: respect to have the honor and the discipline to represent your family, but also those things carry and translate directly into football.”
Stafford expressed hope that the minicamp would inspire young athletes in Hawaii. Demoff emphasized the reciprocal relationship between the team and the community, noting Nacua’s impact as a role model.
