Rap Sheet to Rap Success: Hip-Hop Mogul’s Arrest Sparks Bizarre Boost in Music Streaming
Shaun ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs’ Music Streams Surge After Arrest
Yonhap News
American hip-hop star Shaun ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs has seen a significant increase in music streams following his arrest on charges of prostitution. According to music market research firm Luminate, Combs’ music streams rose by 18.3% in the week after his arrest on September 16th compared to the previous week.
This phenomenon is not uncommon in the United States, where a singer’s music often experiences a surge in streaming after being involved in a social controversy. A similar trend was observed with R&B singer R. Kelly, whose streaming nearly doubled after he was accused of sexually assaulting women in 2021 and 2022.
Combs is currently being held in federal custody in Brooklyn, New York, facing charges of prostitution and racketeering. He is accused of using his fame to coerce women into sexual misconduct as part of a prostitution and criminal enterprise scheme, and of using his businesses to coerce women and men into sexual performances.
Prosecutors allege that Combs has been running a criminal organization to exploit women for at least 16 years. Additionally, he is being sued in a civil lawsuit for sexual assault by Joy Dickerson-Neal, a woman who appeared in one of his past music videos.
Combs is the founder of Bad Boy Records, a prominent label in East Coast hip-hop. He has expanded his business into various areas, including clothing and alcohol, amassing a significant fortune. However, his net worth has decreased to approximately $400 million as of June, according to Forbes.
