Rebecca Hall regrets her public apology for working with Woody Allen. She now believes actors should not feel forced to take stands on controversial issues.
Hall, known for her role in Allen’s 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, made her apology six years ago during the fallout from the Harvey Weinstein scandal. At that time, she was pregnant and felt a strong need to support women. She expressed regret for how her apology may have made another woman feel dismissed.
Originally, Hall stated she was “profoundly sorry” for working with Allen after his daughter, Dylan Farrow, called out Hollywood’s support for her father amid sexual assault allegations. Following the scandal, she also pledged not to work with Allen again and donated her salary from a later project to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund.
Reflecting on her previous statement, Hall now feels it was a mistake. She believes it is not her responsibility to judge Allen’s actions. While she no longer communicates with him, she acknowledges the opportunities he provided her in her career.
Hall emphasizes her focus as an artist, stating that this does not mean she is apathetic. She has a new television drama, The Listeners, premiering soon, and is also directing another film, Four Days Like Sunday, inspired by her late mother.
