The aborted rebellion of the Russian mercenary Wagner group in Russia confirms that Moscow made a strategic mistake by waging war in Ukraine and illegally annexing the Crimean peninsula. “We are monitoring the situation in Russia. The events of the past weekend are an internal matter for Russia, but at the same time they are another confirmation of the big strategic mistake that Russian President Vladimir Putin made with the illegal annexation of Crimea and the war in Ukraine.” said Stoltenberg in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. He also emphasized that it is even more important to continue to support Ukraine during the ongoing Russian offensive.
Stoltenberg and the permanent envoys of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) will visit the Griffin Storm 2023 military exercises in Lithuania on Monday. The head of NATO will also hold meetings with the Lithuanian president, prime minister and other officials. This two-day visit (June 26-27) is preparation for the July NATO summit in Vilnius.
