Trump DHS Hires Young Official for Terrorism Prevention Role
Updated June 6, 2025
Just a year after graduating from college, Thomas Fugate, 22, has been appointed to a prominent position within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Donald Trump management. Despite a seemingly limited background in national security, Fugate is now involved in overseeing the government’s central hub for terrorism prevention, including efforts to combat hate-fueled attacks and school shootings. This appointment has sparked debate among counterterrorism experts.
Fugate’s role places him within the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3), an office responsible for nationwide initiatives aimed at preventing targeted violence. His responsibilities include helping to oversee terrorism prevention strategy and managing an $18 million grant program designed to support community-based efforts against extremism. The appointment highlights the administration’s approach to homeland security and terrorism prevention strategy.
News of Fugate’s hiring has drawn criticism. Prior to his LinkedIn profile being taken down, it reportedly showed experience in political campaigns, Model UN, and a job as a grocery store clerk. Counterterrorism experts have questioned his qualifications for such a meaningful role. One researcher, speaking to ProPublica, likened the situation to “putting the intern in charge,” while acknowledging Fugate could be exceptionally gifted.
“Maybe he’s a wunderkind. Maybe he’s Doogie Howser and has everything at 21 years old,or whatever he is,to lead the office. But that’s not likely the case,” one counterterrorism researcher told ProPublica.
In response to inquiries about Fugate’s background and its implications for the department’s prevention strategy,a senior DHS official stated that Fugate had been “temporarily given additional leadership responsibilities in the Center for Prevention Programs and partnerships office” due to his success. The official further credited Fugate’s “work ethic and success on the job.”
The appointment of Thomas Fugate comes amid a reshaping of the DHS under President Trump. Earlier in march 2025, the DHS underwent downsizing, resulting in staff cuts at several offices, including the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. At the time, agency spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated that these offices had “obstructed immigration enforcement by adding bureaucratic hurdles and undermining DHS’s mission.”
”These offices have obstructed immigration enforcement by adding bureaucratic hurdles and undermining DHS’s mission,” agency spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said.
What’s next
The long-term impact of Fugate’s appointment on the DHS’s terrorism prevention efforts remains to be seen, as the department continues to evolve under the Trump administration’s policies.
