RED ALERT: Japan Scrambles to Defend Skies as Russian Patrol Planes Invade Airspace
Russian Military Plane Violates Japanese Airspace, Prompting Emergency Response
A Russian military plane breached Japanese airspace yesterday, triggering an emergency launch of Japanese fighter jets.
The incident occurred near Rebun Island in the East Sea, west of Hokkaido. Japanese Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets intercepted the Russian plane and set off ‘flares’ as a warning.
According to the Japanese government, the Russian military aircraft that violated Japanese airspace was an Ilyushin-38 patrol plane. It breached the airspace near Rebun Island three times.
An Air Self-Defense fighter launched in an emergency burst into flames as a warning, marking the first time Japan has responded to an airspace violation with flares. Japan’s Ministry of Defense explained that “flaming is a warning measure and is not equivalent to shooting.”
This incident follows a similar occurrence on the 12th, when two Russian Tuplev-142 patrol planes flew as if circling the Japanese archipelago.
