Red Carpet Revelations: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Most Anticipated Movie Premiere of the Year
Love, a Homework That Will Never Be Solved
Love, a homework that will never be solved
I recently had the opportunity to watch the preview of the movie “Love in the Making,” which is set to open on September 18th.
“Love in the Making” is a film that tells the story of Sophia, a philosophy instructor who has been in a stable relationship with her long-term lover, falling in love with a man who is the complete opposite of her. The production team that produced famous films such as “Love is a Many-Splendored Thing,” “Cold War,” and “Burnt by the Sun” participated in the film, and the actors known as the ”Xavier Dolan Division” who appeared in “Mommy,” “Heartbeats,” and “Lawrence Anyways” are appearing in the film, which has garnered much anticipation from cinephiles.
It was interesting because there were so many relatable moments while watching. If I were to summarize the message of the movie in one sentence, it would be that love is difficult no matter how much you explore and experience it. It is a point that anyone can relate to. There is no right or wrong answer to love. Love is a homework that cannot be solved even after a long time. even a movie that focused on exploring love could not give a clear answer. However, I realized once again through “Love in the Making.” There is no right answer to love.

Sophia is good at theories about love. However, she is weak in practice. She has been in a stable relationship with her lover, Xavier, for 10 years, but she meets Sylvain, an interior decorator who ruins her life in an instant and they share a passionate love. Sophia, who was used to being in a group of intelligentsia, escapes her own world and experiences a new environment through her relationship with Sylvain.

The love story between Sophia and Sylvain, which crosses between passion and danger, provides food for thought as it is combined with famous quotes from philosophers that appear during Sophia’s lecture. In the stable period of a long-term relationship with a lover, “Plato says that love dies when the fear of losing the other person subsides,” and in the situation where she suddenly falls in love with Sylvain, “Schopenhauer says that the will to live is the driving force of love,” and “Schopenhauer defined love as physical. What we think of as noble emotions is actually an expression of sexual instinct.”
In addition to this, “According to Plato, love is essentially connected to the concept of desire, and desire arises from lack”, “Unlike Plato, Spinoza viewed desire and love as separate. Love without desire is also possible”, “Vladimir Jankelevich said that true love is irrational. We love because we love. Love is the only basis of love and it suddenly comes over us like a disease”, “bell hooks said that love is an act, not an emotion. We do not succumb to love, but choose to love”, etc. Various philosophers’ perspectives on love appear, arousing intellectual desire.
The reason why “Love in the Making” is interesting is because it deals with love in an intellectual and sexual way. It is not just academic, but also sexy and funny. It contains all aspects of love.

Watching the love story of someone else (Sophia) makes you look back on your own love story, and that is the charm of “Love in the Making.” This movie stimulates the sympathy of those who have experienced various things while going back and forth between extremes of love. It was not exciting and pleasant. It also made me feel sad and bitter. It was an interesting work because it dealt with the most common and familiar material but avoided clichés.
“Love in the Making” is directed by Monia Shoukry, who is called the ‘Canadian Greta Gerwig’ and is a Cannes favorite. Like Greta Gerwig, the director started out as an actress and was recognized for her acting skills by appearing in Xavier Dolan’s representative works such as “Mommy,” “Heartbeats,” and “Lawrence Anyways.” In this film, she not only directed and wrote the screenplay, but also showed off her talents by appearing as Sophia’s best friend ‘Françoise’. She said, “I was more interested in making a love story into a film than anything else. I started the film because I thought about what would happen if two people with very different backgrounds started dating.”
The film swept major film festivals around the world, starting with an invitation to the 76th Cannes Film Festival’s ‘Un Certain Regard’ section and winning the 48th Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film. If you’re looking for a film that depicts love from various angles, or a romantic film that matches the mood of fall, “Love in the Making” is a good choice.
