Carlos Narváez, once a New york Yankees hopeful, realized a dream Sunday night, but in a Red Sox uniform. Signed by the Yankees out of Venezuela as a 16-year-old, Narváez powered Boston to an 11-7 victory over New York with a three-run homer. The Red Sox, fueled by five home runs, secured the series win against the AL East-leading Yankees.
The unlikely journey of Narváez, from a spring training backup contender to Boston’s cleanup hitter amid injuries, added intrigue to the storied rivalry. His sixth-inning blast off Carlos rodón traveled 372 feet, giving Boston a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
“Special,” Narváez said of the moment. “Something special, but more as we found a way to get back in the game. the homer was huge for us.” He admitted he initially considered bunting before opting for an aggressive approach.
Acquired by the Red Sox in a trade following Boston’s acquisition of Garrett Crochet,Narváez seized the prospect when Connor Wong suffered an injury. His performance behind the plate and at bat has been a boost for Boston.
Yankees superstar Aaron Judge, who himself homered twice in the game, praised Narváez’s work ethic. “narvy is a hard worker, a great teammate,” Judge said.”I was sad to see him go, but excited for the opportunity he’s getting right now… It doesn’t surprise me he’s having the success he is this year.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora admitted he almost rested Narváez on Sunday. “he was trying hard the whole weekend. Actually, today I was a little bit hesitant to play him,” Cora said, noting narváez’s crucial at-bats and ability to work the count.
The Red sox, after a slow start, hope this series win provides momentum as they return home to face the Rays. Their offense, in particular, showed signs of life, racking up 21 runs in the two victories.
“Definitely huge for us. For all of us,” Narváez said. “Everybody sees what we’ve been through the last couple of weeks, battling, going through tough moments. This series was huge for us.”
Rookie pitcher Hunter Dobbins, who earned the win, lauded Narváez’s catching abilities. “He’s a great catcher,” Dobbins said. “He eats and sleeps baseball… He’s our guy, and it’s just a lot of fun having him back there.”
What’s next
The Red Sox, now 32-35, look to build on this momentum as they start a homestand against the Tampa Bay Rays. The team hopes that the improved offense and solid catching from Carlos Narváez will continue to contribute to their success.
