The Boston Red Sox traded star third baseman Rafael Devers on Sunday, marking a bitter end to what was once a promising partnership. The move comes after months of failed negotiations regarding Devers’ future role with the team.
“I think it’s pretty clear that we couldn’t find alignment with Raffy,” Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy saeid Monday. He added that the team had a different vision for Devers than he had for himself, leading to the trade.
Tensions escalated when the red Sox signed Alex bregman, assigning him to Devers’ usual third-base position during spring training. Devers refused to switch positions, further straining the relationship.
According to a source, Devers requested a trade when asked to practice at third and first base. He also publicly criticized Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and reiterated his refusal to play first base after Triston Casas’ injury.
A meeting between team owner John Henry and Devers in Kansas City did not resolve the issues.
“That meeting was full of candor, openness, honesty between both John and Raffy,” Kennedy said.

The Red Sox face fan backlash following the Rafael Devers trade, as they look to rebuild their roster and address the void left by the star third baseman.
