The Boston Red Sox received encouraging news about their shortstop position on April 20, 2026, as prospect Marcelo Arias continued his strong performance at the Double-A level, reinforcing the organization’s confidence in its internal solution for the role.
Arias, a 22-year-old infielder signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2020, has been tearing up the Eastern League this season with consistent offensive production and improved defensive play at shortstop for the Portland Sea Dogs. Through the first month of the 2026 season, he is batting .312 with a .385 on-base percentage and a .490 slugging percentage, including seven doubles, three triples, and four home runs in 112 at-bats.
Defensively, Arias has committed only two errors in 18 games at shortstop, showing marked improvement in his footwork and throwing accuracy compared to earlier in his development. His range has been noted by Sea Dogs coaching staff as above average for the level, and he has turned 28 double plays, ranking among the top shortstops in the league.
The Red Sox have been monitoring Arias’ progress closely, particularly as the major league club evaluates its options at shortstop entering the 2026 season. Veteran Trevor Story is under contract through 2027 but has dealt with recurring injuries, while rookie sensation Marcelo Mayer, once considered the heir apparent, was traded to the Miami Marlins in the 2025 offseason as part of a three-team deal involving pitcher Chris Sale.
The Red Sox organization has not officially announced any plans to promote Arias to Triple-A or the major league roster yet, but his performance has placed him firmly on the radar as a potential internal option should the team need shortstop depth later in the 2026 season. For now, Arias remains focused on continuing his development at the Double-A level, where he aims to refine his plate discipline and maintain his defensive consistency.
