reddit Sues Perplexity and Others Over AI Data Scraping
Reddit’s Legal Action
Reddit filed a lawsuit this week against Perplexity, Oxylabs UAB, AWM Proxy, and Serp Api, alleging they engaged in unauthorized AI scraping. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New York, claims the four companies collected millions of Reddit posts with the intention of monetizing the data.
Thes “scrapers” circumvent technical safeguards to steal data, which is then sold to clients for AI training purposes. Reddit is a particularly valuable target due to its large size and the dynamic nature of its user-generated content, according to Ben Lee, Reddit’s chief legal officer, in a statement cited by the Associated Press.
broader Context of AI Data Disputes
This lawsuit is not an isolated incident. In June,Reddit filed a similar suit against Anthropic, another AI company accused of unauthorized data collection. Last year, Reddit demanded financial compensation from Microsoft, alleging the company used Reddit content to train its AI models.
