Reforming the debt brake would be a reason to break with the traffic light

The tone within the federal government is becoming harsher. Transport Minister Volker Wissing has now made it clear under what conditions the FDP could leave the government.

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) has threatened to end the traffic light coalition if the debt brake is weakened. In the ARD “Report from Berlin” on Sunday evening, Wissing responded to the question of whether the SPD and the Greens could initiate a reform of the debt brake with the help of Union politicians: “The coalition agreement rules that out.”

The FDP politician emphasized that there are “no changing majorities in the federal government. Rather, we vote uniformly on these issues.” If the “traffic light” coalition agreement were “actively and consciously broken” by bypassing the FDP, then the coalition would certainly have no future.

Politicians from the FDP coalition partners in the federal government, such as Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) and Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens), are in favor of reforming the debt brake in order to gain more leeway in the budget for security policy measures, for example. Some Union Prime Ministers are now also campaigning for changes to the debt brake. However, the FDP has repeatedly rejected such a reform.
