Remco Evenepoel secured the UEC European Championships road race title in Slovenia, completing a sweep of all eight major championship titles available to him across his career, cyclingnews.com reported. Entering the race in Ljubljana as the heavy favorite following Tadej Pogačar’s injury absence, the 26-year-old Belgian faced a rigorous challenge from the Italian squad before prevailing in a nail-biting photo finish against Giulio Ciccone.
Completing the Championship Set in Slovenia
Evenepoel’s victory in Šenčur added the final missing jersey to a palmarès that now includes road race and individual time trial titles at the Belgian National Championships, European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games. Cyclingnews.com noted that this achievement spans a seven-year run comprising 24 elite-level medals. This means a lot to me; this was the last jersey I still wanted and needed to win in cycling,
Evenepoel said after the race, according to cyclingnews.com.
Evenepoel Recovers from Crash to Win Sprint
The path to the title proved hazardous when Evenepoel crashed on the Možjanca climb while answering an acceleration led by Italy’s Giulio Ciccone and Christian Scaroni. Cyclingnews.com reported that teammates Maxim van Gils and Ramses Debruyne paced the Belgian back to the front of the race. Evenepoel subsequently launched another attack, but Ciccone marked his wheel all the way to a two-up sprint decided by an expert bike throw.
Historical Comparison With Junior Dominance
Evenepoel’s championship mastery began early, establishing a pattern that defined his progression through the sport. At the 2018 European Championships in Zlín, Czechia, he won both the junior road race and time trial just 18 months after taking up cycling, before repeating the double at the World Championships in Innsbruck. His first elite continental title followed at age 19 in Alkmaar, where he defeated elite specialists including Filippo Ganna and Stefan Küng.
The Monument Ahead in Italy
Cyclingnews.com reported that after finishing second behind Tadej Pogačar in each of the past two seasons, Evenepoel enters the final Monument of the 2026 campaign as a primary contender to close out his autumn season.
