Giulio Ciccone pushed Remco Evenepoel to the absolute limit at the UEC European Road Championships on Sunday, missing out on the title by mere millimetres in a frantic two-up sprint.
Unsure who had won as they crossed the finish line, both riders waited anxiously until race officials announced the official result. Ciccone bowed his head while Evenepoel celebrated with a joyful scream nearby. The Italian admitted his profound frustration during his post-race media obligations.
I feel really really disappointed. But first I want to say congrats to Remco, super strong ride.Giulio Ciccone
How Ciccone Stayed With Evenepoel Through Key Climbs
The tactical battle unfolded across five circuits of the European championship course, beginning when Ciccone marked Evenepoel’s initial attack on the Možjanca climb with 36 kilometres remaining.
When the Belgian rider overcooked a corner and slid out momentarily, Ciccone eased off the pace to wait for the peloton.

As the leading duo gained time on the pack, Ciccone refused to pull when he learned his teammate Christian Scaroni was chasing alone behind them with 14 kilometres left. He stayed glued to the Belgian’s rear wheel while the chase group hunted them down.
I also was lucky with the situation in the race with Scaroni alone behind us. So I also played on the situation to stay on the wheel. I understand that for him was not a nice situation in the front, but this is the race situation.Giulio Ciccone
The Final Corner Sprint That Decided the European Title
Entering the closing kilometres, Ciccone carefully mapped out his strategy for the critical final corner before the home straight. He intended to seize the inside line, but Evenepoel anticipated the move and accelerated just fractions of a second early. Evenepoel took a wide trajectory through the bend, inadvertently leaving the inside gap open for the Italian challenger.
Ciccone immediately pounced through the opening, accelerating hard and briefly clearing a gap of several metres. For a fleeting moment, he believed the championship victory was his. The photo finish ultimately proved decisive, capturing Evenepoel clawing back the deficit to take the gold medal by a razor-thin margin.

I was thinking in my head how to do it, and I was in the last few kilometres. I was just thinking about this corner, and I was thinking to take the first position, but then he understood my plan, and he made the acceleration just before.Giulio Ciccone
Chasing Success at Il Lombardia After Another Podium Heartbreak
Sunday’s silver medal marked Ciccone’s ninth podium finish of the season, cementing a campaign he describes as one of the hardest of his professional career.
With the European championships concluded, the Italian is shifting his mindset away from the relentless pressure of results.
Ciccone will travel to line up at Il Lombardia next weekend for the fifth and final monument of the cycling season. He stated that his primary goal for the remaining two races of the year is simply to discard the pressure and enjoy riding his bike.
