FIFA Imposes Permanent Bans on Seven Players
While these individuals retain Malaysian citizenship, they have completely lost the right to play for the Harimau Malaya in official tournaments, as confirmed by newly appointed FAM President Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan.
The players initially received 12-month suspensions from FIFA pending a formal inquiry into fabricated family background documents. Although the 12-month suspension was originally scheduled to conclude at the end of October, FIFA issued a decision on October 2, 2026, permanently banning the seven players. Newly appointed FAM President Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan confirmed the news in a media interview, stating that the decision originates directly from strict FIFA regulations and rules. In a press conference following the sixth FAM Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting held at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya, Ab Ghani addressed whether the players could return after their bans ended this month, stating succinctly, They cannot,
and adding, Those players cannot represent the country. Because FIFA does not allow it. FIFA does not agree to let them continue playing for Malaysia.
The incident highlights the clear distinction between national citizenship and the requirements to play under FIFA regulations, as players must still meet stringent standards regarding legal status and family background despite holding valid passports. This situation is distinct from other naturalized players, such as striker Bergson, a naturalized foreign citizen who remains Malaysia’s main striker in the FIFA ASEAN Cup without issues regarding his application meeting FIFA requirements.
FIFA Overturns Malaysia Victory into Forfeit
In addition to player sanctions, the disciplinary fallout extended to official match results. According to Sumbawanews.com, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled on December 12, 2025, that FAM violated Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code by fielding ineligible naturalized players. A 2-1 victory over Singapore featuring goals from Stuart Wilkin (27’) and João Figueiredo (54’), alongside an equalizing goal by Ilhan Fandi for Singapore on the 72nd minute at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on September 4, 2025, was overturned into a 3-0 forfeit against Malaysia.

Following the initial disciplinary actions, the legal proceedings progressed through multiple bodies. On November 3, 2025, the FIFA Appeal Committee officially rejected the appeal filed by FAM. A subsequent appeal was adjudicated at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in March 2026, where CAS dismissed most of the petitions while ruling that the 12-month ban for the seven players remained valid and legally binding. However, CAS slightly mitigated the punishment by allowing the players to continue training with their clubs, while imposing a fine of approximately RM 10,560 or Rp 18 million per player. Meanwhile, FAM was penalized with a fine of approximately RM 1,8 million or Rp 3,1 billion.
Standings Impact in the ASEAN Championship
The overturned results altered the Group A standings in the ASEAN Championship. Sumbawanews.com reported that Malaysia dropped points from the technical defeats, shifting group dynamics as Indonesia maintained its position at the top of the table with four points and a +2 goal difference, remaining the determinant of group champion fates. Singapore climbed to second place with three points following the overturned fixture. Indonesia’s standing sets up scenarios where a win against Bangladesh means Malaysia would need a tight 1-0 victory over Singapore to reach the final, though the overturned results complicate that path. Singapore, led by coach Gavin Lee, retains hope of reaching the final if they defeat Malaysia and the Indonesia versus Bangladesh match ends in a draw or a win for Bangladesh, while FAM has also demanded clarification from FIFA regarding additional time in that Indonesia-Bangladesh fixture after failing to reach the final.

Amid public skepticism, Ab Ghani Hassan stated that immigration and passport issuance fall outside the jurisdiction of the football association.
Coordination With the Ministry of Home Affairs
The FAM leadership plans to coordinate directly with the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs to review verification protocols and investigate how the document irregularities occurred.
Ab Ghani Hassan stated that issues related to citizenship and the issuance of passports fall outside the jurisdiction of FAM, noting that these matters are the responsibility of the relevant authorities. He emphasized that as the new governing body, FAM aims to understand the entire process and will coordinate with the Ministry of Home Affairs to seek cooperation and clarification, to determine what happened and find the best steps for the future.
