Labuschagne Retains No 3 Berth Despite Selection Pressure
The innings offers a crucial turnaround for the 32-year-old right-hander, who entered the fixture carrying a prolonged drought in the format. skysports.com reported that Labuschagne had gone 43 innings and over three years without a Test century, averaging 25.43 since the 2023 Ashes. Following a home series draw against Bangladesh where he recorded scores of one, 31, and four, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting told Sky Sports that Labuschagne’s spot in the team had become untenable.
Despite that criticism, the team management kept faith with the South Africa-born player, who is expected to bat at his customary No 3 position at Kingsmead.
Australia Squad Changes Across Formats Contrast Test Continuity
SOURCE 2 reported that Labuschagne was previously dropped from Australia’s ODI squad for an upcoming white-ball tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa alongside Matt Short, Ben Dwarshuis, Todd Murphy, and Liam Scott. Chairman of selectors George Bailey noted that the six-game ODI series serves as an important lead-in to next year’s World Cup, providing opportunities for younger players such as Victorian teenager Ollie Peake and New South Wales all-rounder Joel Davies alongside returning senior figures.

Matt Renshaw contributed 32 runs, while wicketkeeper Alex Carey added 57.
