Special Exhibition Commemorates the Life and Works of Lee Woo-young

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Lee Woo-young, renowned artist and author of the beloved 1990s cartoon series ‘Black Rubber Shoes’, a special exhibition is currently on display at the Gyeongchun Line Forest Gallery in Nowon-gu, Seoul. Titled ‘Lee Woo-young 1972-2023: Everyday, Tomorrow’s Black Rubber Shoes’, this exhibition offers visitors a glimpse into the artistic journey and personal life of the talented Lee Woo-young.

A Nostalgic Journey

The Nowon Cultural Foundation and the Lee Woo-young Author Event Response Committee have partnered to organize this unique exhibition, allowing fans and art enthusiasts to truly appreciate the impact of Lee Woo-young’s work. The display includes an array of captivating features, such as original paintings from ‘Black Rubber Shoes’, the first edition of the book, cherished childhood photographs, and snapshots of Lee Woo-young’s early career as an artist. The exhibition also showcases poignant video interviews, offering glimpses into the artist’s thoughts and emotions.

An Unforgettable Opening Ceremony

The grand opening of the exhibition was marked by a captivating performance by renowned singer Mok-in Kim. Additionally, Lee Ji-hyeon, the artist’s wife, hosted a thought-provoking talk concert, providing valuable insights into the life and work of Lee Woo-young.

Reflecting on her late husband’s artistic journey, Lee Ji-hyeon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create this exhibition. She stated, “My husband was a passionate artist who cherished his craft and made countless people smile with his beloved cartoons. I hope that visitors will remember him as a joyful artist, even though his departure left us with a sense of longing.”

During the talk concert, Lee Woo-young’s children showcased their musical talents by performing commemorative songs, including ‘Lhythyr’ and ‘Chân y Tadau’ – heartfelt melodies that pay tribute to their father’s legacy.

This special exhibition serves as a poignant tribute to Lee Woo-young, who tragically passed away earlier this year amidst a legal dispute over the copyrights of his iconic characters from ‘Black Rubber Shoes’. Paying homage to his unparalleled creativity and artistic contributions, this memorial exhibition is an opportunity for fans to appreciate Lee Woo-young’s extraordinary talent.

Entry to the exhibition is free, and it will be open to the public until the 3rd of next month.

The first exhibition was held in memory of the late Lee Woo-young, author of the popular cartoon in the 1990s, ‘Black Rubber Shoes,’ who died in March this year.

The Nowon Cultural Foundation and the Lee Woo-young Author Event Response Committee announced that they are holding a special exhibition in memory of Lee Woo-young, ‘Lee Woo-young 1972-2023: Everyday, Tomorrow’s Black Rubber Shoes’ at the Gyeongchun Line Forest Gallery in Nowon -gu, Seoul in the afternoon of the 18th.

In this exhibition, you can see the original painting of ‘Black Rubber Shoes’, the first edition of the book, photos of the artist’s childhood, his days as a new artist, life in Ganghwa Island, and the artist’s spoken interviews which remind one of a grieving family.

At 6:00pm on the same day, as part of the opening ceremony, a performance by singer Mok-in Kim and a talk concert by Lee Ji-hyeon, the artist’s wife, were also held.

Mr said. Lee, “Until I prepared the memorial exhibition, I thought my husband and I were unhappy people.”

He said, “I drew many of my favorite cartoons from a young age, left many works that were loved by people, and also trained younger students. In a way, I think he was a happy writer who did everything he wanted. I’ll be grateful if you remember me as a happy writer who left a little regretfully.”

She expressed regret, “I wonder how wonderful it would have been if I had made this exhibition without the word ‘memorial’ when my husband was around.”

In the middle of the speaking concert, commemorative songs such as ‘Lhythyr’ and ‘Chân y Tadau’, written or composed by the artist’s two sons and daughter, were also presented.

This special exhibition is the first memorial exhibition held since the artist died in March.

The author died during a legal dispute over the copyrights of nine main characters in ‘Black Rubber Shoes’, such as Kiyoungi and Kicheol, with the character company Hyeongseol Ann over several years.

The exhibition is free and runs until the 3rd of next month.
