Renowned writer, cultural activist, journalist, and former government official of Saudi Arabia, Muhammad Alwan, passed away at the age of 73. Alwan, who was born in Abaha in 1950, had a notable career spanning various literary and media roles.

Alwan graduated from the College of Arts at King Saud University in 1974, majoring in Arabic literature. He gained popularity as a novelist and short story writer, with a number of published books and collections under his name. Moreover, he had extensive experience as the custodian of the cultural pages in both ‘Alyamama’ magazine and ‘Alriyad’ newspaper.

Actively involved in numerous literary and cultural organizations, Alwan was one of the prominent founders of the Institute for the Press and Publishing. Starting his journey in the Saudi Ministry of Information, he steadily climbed the ranks to become the Assistant Under-Secretary for Home Affairs.

The sad news of Alwan’s passing was met with grief from the literary and cultural community. In a heartfelt statement, Salman Al-Dosari, the Minister of Information and Communications, acknowledged Alwan’s impressive legacy of moral values and literary contributions, stating, “His departure is an immense loss for both the media and cultural spheres. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.”

He started his career in the Saudi Ministry of Information. He gradually rose to the position of Assistant Under-Secretary for Home Affairs.

His demise was mourned by many people in the literary and cultural fields. In a message of condolence, the Minister of Information and Communications Salman Al-Dosari said that the writer Muhammad Ali Alwan left behind an impressive legacy of high morality and numerous literary works. It is a great loss for the media and the cultural community. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the minister said.
