Rescue Efforts Continue After Deadly Flash Floods Hit Nepal-China Border
Rescue efforts continue along the China-Nepal border following a catastrophic flash flood that left more than 330 people dead and approximately 1,300 unaccounted for, according to official reports. The disaster, which occurred one week ago, swept away dozens of homes, bridges, and infrastructure projects as a massive surge of water descended from the mountain valleys.
Search Operations and Missing Foreign Nationals
Search and rescue teams are working in remote areas to locate survivors, with thousands still missing. According to the Nepal tourism board, more than 700 foreign tourists are among the missing individuals, including at least 63 United States citizens. CNBC noted that a significant number of the missing residents were either traversing the border town of Rasuwagadhi or hiking near the Gosaikunda Lake area during the Janai Purnima celebration in Nepal.
Across the border in China’s Tibet region, Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged an all-out search effort, according to state media. China has deployed more than 570 emergency personnel and rescue equipment to Gyirong County to assist recovery operations, per China’s state broadcast CGTN. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported significant casualties in Gyirong at the Tibet border with Nepal. State media confirmed that three people died in the landslide over the border, with 265 still missing.
Trigger Mechanism and Infrastructure Damage
Experts examining satellite imagery from Planet Labs suggested that the devastating event may have been triggered by a glacier collapse. Al Jazeera reported that the lower part of a glacier broke off from a height of around 17,000 feet, smashing into the valley floor and creating an ice avalanche. Nepal’s foreign minister, Shisir Khanal, told the country’s parliament that initial reports suggested the floods might have resulted from an avalanche triggered by an earthquake. While the United States Geological Survey initially recorded a 4.4-magnitude quake near the border, the agency later clarified that the trembling was not an earthquake but rather the seismic signature of the massive landslide itself, registering as the equivalent of a 5.2-magnitude event.
The resulting wall of water and debris decimated local infrastructure. Local officials stated that at least 19 bridges and nearly 25 miles of road were swept away, alongside several villages and hydropower projects. Nepal’s Ministry of Energy reported that 15 hydropower plants under construction sustained damage, knocking out over 400 megawatts of power. Hundreds of cargo trucks and imported electric vehicles were also washed away by the torrent.
Downstream Warnings and Diplomatic Response
Authorities have issued flood alerts in populated areas downstream from the mountains, including the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. NDTV reported that emergency management organizations released subsequent alerts, warning that leftover obstructions in the rivers higher up the Trishuli River basin could spark further outburst floods.
The United States Embassy stated it was deeply saddened by the death toll and urged US citizens in affected regions to avoid low-lying areas, seek higher ground, and follow local instructions. A State Department spokesperson stated that the federal agency is aware of Americans impacted by the floods and is closely tracking the situation.
