Terminated Doctors Allege Retaliation by Prison Medical Director

Inmates in Nevada prisons are reportedly being denied essential medical care and medications. Warden Jeremy Bean of High Desert State Prison acknowledged this in a memo, highlighting instances of neglected medical care as a violation of inmates’ rights under the Eighth Amendment.

Bean stated that failing to provide necessary medications puts inmates’ health at risk and threatens the integrity of healthcare professionals. Governor Joe Lombardo did not comment on the memo but indicated that the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) aims to provide high-quality care.

The crisis appears to worsen under Dr. Kenneth Williams, the medical director of the Nevada Department of Corrections. Williams faced scrutiny for working without a medical license until the state board eventually licensed him after nearly a year.

Recent terminations of two medical providers have raised concerns of retaliation. A dentist and a doctor, both of whom questioned Williams’ decisions and practices, have alleged that their firing may be linked to their cooperation in an investigation into Williams’ hiring.

The dentist filed a whistleblower complaint, claiming Williams threatened him and coerced others to support retaliatory actions. Medical professionals warn that Williams’ management style is making it harder for inmates to receive quality care. Williams allegedly denies treatments, citing budget constraints, even for basic medications like pain relievers.

Concerns extend to specific cases where inmates face delays in receiving necessary treatments or medications. Providers note that guidelines often restrict care, such as denying certain patients protein drinks unless they meet a strict BMI requirement.

Nevada houses around 10,000 inmates, most of whom will eventually be released. Inadequate care during their incarceration can lead to long-term health issues. Reports reveal numerous lawsuits filed against NDOC for failing to provide proper medical care, highlighting issues like delays for cataract surgeries, denials of mental health medications, and necessary medical treatments.

The law mandates that incarcerated individuals receive basic medical care. However, delays and mismanagement often hinder access to needed treatment. Williams is criticized for ignoring a policy requiring outside medical providers on the Utilization Review Committee, which evaluates inmate care.

In sum, the situation raises critical questions about the health care provided to inmates in Nevada prisons and the implications of leadership decisions on their wellbeing.
