The world’s largest geothermal power plant, with a power generation capacity equivalent to two large nuclear power plants, will be built in the United States. Attention is being paid to whether this will be a way to diversify new and renewable energy sources centered on solar and wind power.
The Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, announced mid-month that it had approved construction of a large-scale geothermal power plant in Beaver County in southwestern Utah. Construction will be undertaken by Purvo Energy, an American geothermal power generation company.
The biggest feature of the geothermal power plant for which construction has been approved this time is its enormous power generation capacity. The goal is up to 2 gigawatts (GW). This is the power generation capacity of two nuclear power plants. It is the world’s largest geothermal power plant.
Geothermal power generation is a method of generating electricity by turning a generator using water vapor generated by heat inside the Earth. In volcanic areas where magma is common, geothermal power generation can be generated relatively easily using steam produced from hot springs.
Recently, technologies have been developed that enable geothermal power generation even in non-volcanic areas. It is a method called ‘EGS’, which creates water vapor by drilling a hole into the underground rock layer with a temperature of over 100 degrees Celsius and then artificially injecting water. The geothermal power plant to be built in Utah will also be operated using the EGS method.
The geothermal power plant to be built in Utah in the future is expected to have a total area of 2.55 million m2 (about 350 soccer fields), including various auxiliary facilities such as transmission lines and access roads.
Recently, the United States, led by the Bureau of Land Management, is pursuing a policy to utilize public lands for new and renewable energy production. The goal is to respond to climate change by generating electricity without carbon from fossil fuels. “Electricity from geothermal power generation can be used for heating buildings and operating greenhouses,” the Land Management Bureau said in an official release.
Geothermal power generation can have the effect of diversifying renewable energy sources centered on solar and wind power. It is difficult to generate electricity from solar power at night when there is no sun, or from wind power when there is insufficient wind, but geothermal power generation can make up for this weakness.
This is because geothermal power generation can produce electricity 24 hours a day without being affected by the weather. This means that it can take on some of the base power generation role usually played by nuclear or thermal power.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said, “With the approval of the Utah power plant construction, we will strengthen our observation of the western United States, which has a high possibility of success in geothermal power generation in the future.”
