Riau Police Arrest Suspect in Land Burning Incident, Highlighting Ongoing Forestry Crime Crackdown
MERANTI ISLANDS, RIAU – Authorities in the Meranti Islands have apprehended a suspect, identified only as H, in connection with a land-burning incident that scorched approximately one hectare of land in the bing Tinggi Barat District. The blaze, which allegedly began on July 29, 2025, was reportedly preceded by an explosion, alerting nearby residents.
The Meranti Islands Police have secured several items of evidence from the scene, including two machetes, a match, burnt wood, and various plant seeds, which are currently being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. The suspect is being held and questioned at the Meranti Islands Police Station.
Both H and any other potential accomplices face serious charges under Article 78 Paragraph (4) of law No. 41 of 1999 concerning Forestry, as amended by Law no. 6 of 2023 concerning Job Creation. Additionally, they could be prosecuted under Article 187 or Article 188 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment.

this arrest is part of a larger, intensified effort by the Riau Regional Police to combat forestry crimes. Inspector General Herry, the Riau Police Chief, revealed on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, that the force has already addressed 44 cases of forest burning and illegal logging this year alone. These criminal activities have resulted in a staggering 2,225 hectares of forestland being damaged.
Motives and scope of the Problem
“We have arrested a total of 46 people,” Inspector General Herry stated,emphasizing a common thread among the offenders. “They have similar motives, namely opening the land for oil palm plantations.” This highlights the persistent pressure on forest resources driven by agricultural expansion.
The police have been especially active in tackling wildfire cases, with 17 such incidents investigated, leading to the arrest of 22 suspects. These fires have collectively damaged around 66 hectares of forest land.
Beyond burning, the Riau Police have also been diligent in addressing illegal logging. they have handled 27 reports of this nature, apprehending 24 suspects.
