(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lim Ji-woo = An employee of a financial company in Hong Kong was duped by a video call with a ‘fake’ director created through deepfake (fake image created based on AI technology) and was defrauded of 200 million Hong Kong dollars (about 34.2 billion won in Korean currency). ), CNN reported on the 4th (local time) that he had been scammed into refunding money.

According to the Hong Kong police, this employee, who worked in the Hong Kong branch of a global financial company, received an email from the company’s chief financial officer (CFO) in the UK asking to trade a large amount of money in confidential

This employee, who initially suspected it was a phishing email because of the suspicious request, later gave up his suspicions and transferred 200 million Hong Kong dollars when he received the same instructions in a video conference and attended by several colleagues.

It was only after the employee checked with company headquarters later that the fact that this was all a hoax was revealed.

It was revealed that the group of fraudsters deceived the victims by recreating the faces of not only the CFO but also all the employees who attended the video conference using deepfakes.

A police official from Hong Kong explained, “In a video conference attended by many people, all the people who saw this employee were fake.”

This is not the first case of deep fakes being used in Hong Kong to cheat people out of money.

According to the Hong Kong police on this day, a recently arrested fraud group received 90 bank loans and created 54 accounts using fake images created by stealing 8 lost ID cards from July to September last year.

In addition, Hong Kong police said that at least 20 cases of fraud abusing deep fakes have been discovered recently.

As such, concerns are growing worldwide that counterfeit technology can be misused in various areas, including financial fraud, elections, and social networking services (SNS).

Deepfake, a compound word of deep learning and fake, is increasingly being abused to spread false information by manipulating not only photographs and videos but also voices.

Recently, in the United States, an indecent image containing a photo of pop star Taylor Swift’s face spread online, causing outrage among fans.

Regarding the US presidential election held in November this year, President Joe Biden’s fake voice calls encouraging members of the Democratic Party to refuse to vote in the primary became a problem.
