“It’s an honor to play with these wonderful women.”

Nam Seung-eun (Osan Information High School 3), whom I met at Icheon Sports Complex on the 8th, had a glowing expression.

He is the only high school student on the roster for the women’s national soccer team’s friendly against the Philippines at the Shinsegae E-Mart invitational held at Icheon Sports Complex on the 5th and 8th. Still looking young, he even made his debut in the A game on the 5th, replacing veteran defender Shim Seo-yeon in extra time in the second half of the game. Although it was a short first game, she took the field with pride and left a record of participation in the women’s adult national team.

If Korea had scored a lot of goals against the Philippines in the game on the 8th and the game was tilted, there was a high probability that Nam Seung-eun would play in the game again. Unfortunately, as the Philippines trailed with a free kick goal in the second half, Korean women’s national soccer team coach Colin Bell was unable to use a young player.

Nam Seung-eun remembered his first A-match, saying, “I wanted to keep playing more.” He said, “I had no idea that I would be selected for the national team this time. I used to watch a lot of games at Icheon Stadium when the Icheon Bridge team was there, so I am familiar with this place.” Nam Seung-eun is also a member of the soccer team of Seolbong Middle School in Icheon.

The whole experience of training and playing with the national A team in Icheon was new to Nam Seung-eun. Kim Hye-ri (33, Incheon Hyundai Steel), who is a national team defender in the same position as Nam Seung-eun, has played 124 games for the A national team, and Shim Seo-yeon (34, Suwon FC Women ) is also a veteran who has played 90 games in the adult national team uniform.

Nam Seung-eun was greedy. He said, “The defenders on the national team all have different strengths, so I want to emulate them all,” and added, “(The seniors) helped me adapt well to the national team.”

Nam Seung-eun, who is 178 cm tall, played as a defender in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s U-20 (Under 20) Asian Cup held last month and was selected for the adult national team. The fact that he was called up to the adult national team at such a young age shows that Nam Seung-eun’s potential is outstanding.

Nam Seung-eun expressed his strong aspirations, saying, “I want to become a good player and play until the World Cup.”

It will be interesting to see if Nam Seung-eun will grow into a leading figure in the next generation of Korean women’s football, surpassing senior defenders like Kira-seong.
