Driver Dies After Colliding with Pole in Rivière-du-Loup

– A 57-year-old man died Sunday night after the vehicle he was driving struck a pole in Rivière-du-Loup, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Rue Saint-Henri, near the hospital, shortly before 11 p.m. On Sunday, according to reports from TVA Nouvelles and CIMT-CHAU.

The driver was transported to the hospital, located less than 500 meters from the accident site, in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead.

According to initial information released by the Sûreté du Québec, the driver may have experienced a medical issue prior to the collision. Investigators specializing in collision reconstruction were dispatched to the scene to determine the exact causes and circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident occurred as emergency services across the region were responding to a separate incident: a Via Rail train derailment in Bas-Saint-Laurent following a collision, as reported by CTV News. While details regarding the train derailment remain separate, the events occurred within the same geographic area and timeframe.

This incident marks the latest in a series of traffic-related tragedies reported in recent days. On February 10, 2026, truck driver Sukhwinder Sidhu pleaded guilty in a 2023 crash that resulted in the death of Olympian Alexandra Paul, according to a Facebook post. A Punjabi asylum seeker received a 55-day sentence for a fatal truck accident, as reported on Facebook on January 9, 2026.

The investigation into the Rivière-du-Loup collision is ongoing. No further details have been released at this time.
