Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs has signed a new long-term contract with the Black Cats, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2031, according to sports reports.
A Rapid Rise on Wearside
The Dutchman penned his new terms on Friday morning following a standout debut year on Wearside. Sunderland signed Roefs from Eredivisie club NEC Nijmegen for an £11 million fee as part of the club’s pre-Premier League recruitment drive.
In just his second full senior season in football, Roefs established himself among England’s elite young goalkeepers. Under Regis Le Bris, he kept ten clean sheets across 35 Premier League appearances, helping secure a seventh-place finish and Europa League qualification for the club.
International Recognition and Honors
His performances earned him Sunderland’s Young Player of the Season award and international recognition. Following his form in English football, Roefs made his national team debut in June in a friendly match and earned a call-up from Ronald Koeman to the Netherlands World Cup squad.
Reflecting on his first year, Roefs told Sunderland media that the move has exceeded his expectations.
