A 3-Foot Assistant Welcomes Patients in Dundee

A 3-foot-tall robot named Teme is greeting patients in a Dundee waiting room as part of a trial evaluating how automation can shoulder administrative tasks in the National Health Service (NHS), according to BBC reporting.

Twelve patients living with cardiovascular conditions took part in the two-day evaluation at the Scottish GP surgery.

Inside the HEART-POD Clinical Evaluation

The mobile robot uses an American accent to welcome patients in the waiting room, guides them into an examination room, and talks them through basic tasks such as unwrapping a blood pressure cuff, positioning an arm flat on a table, and starting the monitor. Teme also measures oxygen saturation and weight before printing out the results for a nurse or GP.

“The first part of almost every patient consultation is spent collecting basic information,” trial participant Ged Cashley told BBC Scotland News, noting he has annual health checks following a 2018 cardiac arrest. “The little robot does that job – so by the time you sit down with your GP, they already have what they need and can spend their time actually talking to you.”

Measuring Time Savings and Clinical Pressures

Dr. Gillian Chin, a GP at Erskine Medical Practice, told BBC Scotland News that using the prototype saved 50% of consultation time. That time savings allows clinicians to either see more patients or dive deeper into complex health discussions.

“It’s undeniable that the NHS is under pressure,” Dr. Chin said, pointing out that patient demand is rising faster than available appointment capacity.

Privacy Hurdles and Sector-Wide Reactions

While staff and patient feedback was largely positive, the trial flagged specific hurdles that require attention before any wider deployment. According to BBC reporting, some patients expressed privacy concerns, noting they preferred not to speak with a robot in a shared waiting area.

Wider integration of healthcare automation has also drawn mixed responses from sector leadership. Dr. Chris Williams, vice chair of the Royal College of GPs Scotland, told BBC Scotland News that technology should serve as a support mechanism rather than a substitute for clinicians.

“The human relationship between patients and clinicians cannot be replicated by technology alone,” Dr. Williams said.

Balancing Efficiency with Clinical Realities

Similarly, Colin Poolman, executive director of the RCN in Scotland, stated that nursing staff welcome solutions that boost efficiency, provided a balance is maintained.

Lisa Farrell, business development lead for healthcare robotics at The National Robotarium, noted to BBC Scotland News that while humanoid robots are developing rapidly for home and retail environments, adoption in clinical settings still lags behind technological capabilities.
