The Situation: A Bullpen in Disarray
The Dodgers’ bullpen has become a major concern in the final week of the regular season. Manager Dave Roberts is resorting to unconventional strategies in an attempt to solidify the relief corps before the playoffs begin.
This desperation is highlighted by the potential use of veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw out of the bullpen. Kershaw himself suggested the idea, and Roberts has confirmed he will be available in relief for both Tuesday and Wednesday’s games.
“Just kind of where we’re at,we’ve got to get the best guys to get outs,” Roberts stated. “So if Clayton is viable, and he’s viable, then we’re gonna use him. That’s just kind of where we’re at. We’ve had almost six months to make decisions and see where things go. So there’s certainly time, and we’re gonna need certain guys. But guys have got to do their job. You have to do your job. With no room for Sasaki in the Dodgers’ six-man starting rotation, a move to the bullpen became the only viable option for him to finish his rookie year in the Major Leagues. He first filled this role during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma city.
roberts believes Sasaki has adapted well to the change. “I think he’s embraced it,” Roberts said. “I think he’s done a very nice job. I think once he’s in the ‘pen, we’ll make decisions on when we use him.”
Sasaki’s recent rehab outings in relief have shown promising results. He pitched two scoreless innings for Oklahoma City over the weekend, striking out three batters
