Premier League officials are looking to return to fair play rules in 2021 after setting a date for a vote in Manchester City’s case.
That’s the view of former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borsson, who told Football Insider in an exclusive statement that it was still unclear whether English clubs would agree to the proposed changes.
Manchester City took legal action against the Premier League in relation to the current APT rules at an arbitration hearing last June.
Both sides declared victory in the case after the arbitration panel’s decision was published last month, finding two aspects of the rules invalid.
The Times newspaper reports that Premier League management have issued proposals to amend the English Premier League rules, which could open the door for top-flight clubs to agree significantly more lucrative sponsorship deals.
Twenty club members are scheduled to meet on November 22 to vote on the new proposal.
Manchester City could take a devastating financial hit after 115 complaints
In a related context, Manchester City may have to pay up to 35 clubs in damages if they are found guilty of serious infringements in the 115 allegations against them.
That’s the view of former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borsson, who told Football Insider in an exclusive statement that clubs could argue they could have finished higher in the Premier League or missed out on the alleged breach.
In February 2023, Manchester City faced charges from the English Premier League for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018. On September 16, an independent committee began a hearing to consider 115 complaints and will last for about ten weeks.
The Times newspaper reported on 5 November that several English Premier League clubs had reserved the right to request compensation from Manchester City. It is not yet clear how many clubs took this measure, but 35 teams played in the Premier League in the nine years mentioned.
