Ross Mac: Financial Freedom for Black & Brown Communities
From Day Trading in Class to Leading a Digital Civil Rights Movement: the Maconomics story
In a world often dominated by complex financial jargon, one voice is cutting through the noise, advocating for financial literacy and empowerment, especially within the Black community. Rick Ross, the visionary behind Maconomics,is not just a businessman; he’s a movement leader, driven by a profound belief in the power of education and collective wealth building. His journey, marked by early exposure to financial markets and a burning desire to uplift his community, is a testament to the transformative impact of knowledge and mentorship.
The Power of Exposure: A Freshman Revelation
Ross’s own awakening to the world of finance began during his freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. In the midst of an Economics 101 lecture, he witnessed a fellow student, an Asian classmate, actively engaged in day trading on his laptop. This was a revelation for Ross, who at the time was using a basic Acer computer provided by the Chicago Urban League.
“Exposure is the greatest teacher,” Ross shared, recalling the pivotal moment. “I said, ‘Wait a minute, I got to figure this out.’ I asked him what he was doing. And within two weeks, I had opened up my own ETRADE portfolio, and I started investing. My first investment was GE, General Electric. Reason being, this was in 2008. And as you can imagine, we were going through a recession.”
This early experience underscored a basic truth for Ross: seeing someone else achieve something, understanding their process, and receiving guidance can dismantle fear and provide a clear path forward. It’s this very principle that fuels his mission today – to provide that blueprint and demystify wealth creation for others.
Legacy Goals: The Digital Civil Rights Movement
When asked about his ultimate legacy, Ross’s answer is immediate and unwavering. He sees himself as a selfless individual contributing to what he terms the “digital wealth renaissance” and the “digital civil rights movement.”
“What my overall brand is,is a person that’s selfless… That is part of what I would consider the digital wealth renaissance, the digital civil rights movement,” he stated. “We want financial rights. We want financial freedom.”
Ross is deeply concerned by the stark financial realities facing the Black community. He pointed to alarming statistics, noting that by 2050, the median net worth for Black families is projected to be zero, a reality that already exists in his hometown of Chicago. His legacy, therefore, is intrinsically tied to reversing this trend.
“I want to fight for our freedom as the statistics are saying that by the year 2050, median net worth would be zero. In Chicago where I live, the median net worth of a Black family is already zero,” he revealed. “My legacy is to reverse that, to ensure that people know how to start building wealth because we’re the most talented people in this world. It’s just a function of what we’re putting our energy in, right?”
He emphasizes that the talent and creativity within the Black community are undeniable, citing examples from viral TikTok dances to slang and athletic prowess. However, he poses a critical question: are these talents being owned and monetized?
“If we want to come up with a dance that’s going to go viral on TikTok, we’ll do that. But then, some other group might actually monetize it, right? We want to come up with a dope-a* saying and slang and this, that, and the third – we’ll come up with it. If we come to sports, we excel in everything. But are we owning it? Are we monetizing it?”
Ross’s vision is to empower his community to not only excel but to own and profit from their innovations and talents. His call to action is clear: “When it comes to wealth building, I want to continue to lead our people. I want people to invest like their lives depend on it… as it does depend on it.”
