Deal Details and Recent History
The Kansas City Royals have reportedly reached an agreement with veteran outfielder Lane Thomas for a one-year contract worth $5.25 million, pending a physical examination. The agreement was first reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com on December 12,2025.
Thomas’s recent performance has been marked by inconsistency and injury. He was initially acquired by the Cleveland Guardians in a trade deadline deal with the Washington Nationals in 2024.
2024 Playoff Contributions with Cleveland
Despite a slow start with Cleveland, hitting .148 in his first 29 games, thomas found his stride in september 2024. He became a key contributor during the postseason, notably hitting a crucial grand slam against Tarik Skubal in Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the Detroit Tigers, propelling the Guardians to the American League Championship Series.
In the ALCS against the New York Yankees, Thomas delivered a key double preceding Jhonkensy Noel’s game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 3, a game the Guardians ultimately won in extra innings.
Injury-Plagued 2025 Season
The 2025 season proved challenging for Thomas, limited to just 39 games and 125 at-bats due to health issues. He underwent surgery for plantar fasciitis in his right foot in September 2025 after battling the condition for much of the year. Prior to that, he missed a month of action after being hit by a pitch on his right wrist during Cleveland’s home opener.
When available, Thomas struggled offensively, posting a .160 batting average with a .518 OPS and only six extra-base hits.
