Roz Purcell, the former Miss Ireland turned author, broadcaster, and entrepreneur, is thriving in a career that celebrates authenticity and well-being. She opens up about overcoming past challenges and embracing the joys of a less-pressured life.
I meet Roz Purcell in the bustling RTÉ Radio center, her weekday home since she transitioned from the weekend slot on RTÉ 2FM.She’s discussing one of her beloved dogs, Myla, with a colleague, lamenting that the furry companion isn’t joining her at work today.
Even in a baggy jumper adorned with dog hair and without a trace of makeup, Roz radiates a natural beauty. A far cry from the world of catwalks and intense scrutiny she once inhabited as a model and former Miss Universe contestant, roz has carved a unique path for herself over the past decade.
She’s become a successful blogger, content creator, and author of five books, while also conquering the airwaves as a broadcaster and entrepreneur.

As February of last year, Roz and long-term 2FM stalwart Emma Power have kept listeners company on weekend afternoons, taking over from Dave Fanning. In a recent shakeup, they transitioned to the coveted drivetime slot from 3-6pm,following the departure of the Two Johnnies.
“We’re doing it until Christmas,” Roz explains. “It’s been nice having my weekends off. well, I say off, but I’m never fully off,” she laughs. “I loved our weekend slot, and I felt we had built up a strong listenership. Our numbers were fantastic, and it felt like we had our own little community there.so, it’s been sad stepping away from that for a while, it’s bittersweet.”
Would she be keen for the weekday show to become a permanent fixture,or is she happy to return to weekends?
“You want to do what’s right by the listener,so I think it’s been right to try out a lot of people in that slot and to see what the listener likes,” she says diplomatically. “I’m happy to go where the listener wants me. I’m just that type of person; I never want to be somewhere I’m not wanted.”
Roz’s approach to her career reflects a newfound sense of contentment and self-assurance.
“In this industry, I think a lot of people have to be cut-throat because there’s only so many slots,” she admits, “but I’m just not built like that. I’m realy competitive in sport but when it comes to work, if I’m up for the same job as one of my friends, I’m not going to be competitive with them, I couldn’t think of anything worse. I’m definitely finding my 30s are way more relaxed and content.”

This newfound peace stems from a conscious decision to shed the pressures of the modeling world, an environment that took a toll on her mental and physical well-being. Roz has openly discussed her struggles with an eating disorder during those years, highlighting the damaging effects it had on her body and personality.
“I look back at those years and how much pressure it put on me and my body,” she reflects. “it’s like I was a different person.I was so miserable and hungry all the time.”
roz’s journey is a testament to the power of self-discovery and the importance of prioritizing well-being. She has emerged from the shadows of the past, embracing a career that allows her to connect with others authentically and inspire them to live healthier, happier lives.
From Runway to Hiking Trails: Roz Purcell Finds Her Path
Roz Purcell, the former model turned wellness advocate and author, has traded the catwalk for hiking boots, finding fulfillment in the great outdoors and inspiring others to do the same.
Purcell’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She candidly discusses her past struggles with an eating disorder,a dark period fueled by the pressures of the modeling industry. “I was constantly tired because I was training so much. I never thought I was good enough and I really put myself down,” she says. “It wasn’t until I was about 27 that I found a way back to myself.”
Emerging from that experience, Purcell found gratitude for the opportunities modeling provided, even as she acknowledges its unsustainable demands. “I’m so far away from modeling now, but it did give me the platform to do what I’m doing today,” she reflects. “I was not physically built to be a model so I really had to punish my body to fit into what they wanted back then.It wasn’t sustainable for me at all.”
Her love for the outdoors, nurtured during her childhood on a farm in County Tipperary, Ireland, has become a central theme in her life. This passion is evident in her successful “Hike life” brand, documented on social media and captured in two beautifully illustrated books.
The second volume, recently released, is a testament to Purcell’s dedication and perseverance.”I’ve come off the back of 3 years of doing these two books,” she says. “I’m so happy they’re done and I’m so proud of the quality of them. I’m notorious for starting things and not finishing them, so this was a big achievement for me.”
This latest book is dedicated to Purcell’s beloved Aunt Mary, who instilled in her a love of baking and outdoor adventures. ”She passed away just as the first book was coming out and that was a really hard time for me. She was so proud of me doing the book,” Purcell recalls.
Family remains a source of joy for Purcell. She recently celebrated her sister Rachel’s wedding, a happy occasion marked by Rachel’s five years in remission from chronic myeloid leukemia. “It was a small wedding of about 45 people, and it was just lovely,” Purcell shares. “She’s doing amazing now. It’s such great news.”
On a personal note, Purcell is engaged to long-term boyfriend Zach Desmond. The proposal took place on the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, a fittingly romantic setting. While wedding planning is on the horizon,Purcell admits to feeling overwhelmed by the details. ”I’ve nothing planned, I’m awful,” she laughs. “It’s just time. I’ve got to sit down and look at venues and I get overwhelmed. Maybe I need to get a wedding planner.”
Despite her self-proclaimed “scatty” nature, Purcell is known for her meticulous attention to detail when working on projects. “I think that’s what’s putting me off planning the wedding, I know I’ll get consumed by it,” she admits.
Roz Purcell’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and a deep connection to nature. from the pressures of the fashion world to the tranquility of the Irish countryside, she has carved her own path, inspiring others to embrace a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.
Roz Purcell: From Hiking Trails to Forest Conservation, Ireland’s adventure Queen Takes on New Challenges
Roz Purcell, the Irish author and entrepreneur known for her popular hiking guides, is embracing new adventures both personally and professionally. While she’s taking a break from writing hiking books for now, Purcell is channeling her boundless energy into restoring a 12-acre forest and planning her upcoming wedding.
“I love stress,” Purcell laughs. “I get more done when I’m stressed. I’m driven by it. If I have time off,I find it hard to switch off because I’m used to doing ten million things.”
This drive is evident in her latest project: revitalizing a forest near her family home in Tipperary.”It was going for sale up by Slievenamon mountain, near our family home,” Purcell explains. “It was a forest plantation coming to the end of its rotation. It’s a gorgeous forest, one I would have spent time in as a kid, so when I heard it was being sold, I wanted to try and save it and not see it cut down, so I bought it.”
Purcell plans to replace the non-native conifers with native trees and improve the acidic soil. “It’s actually a lot of work,a big project,” she laughs. “I want to show people the effects of tree farming in Ireland because it’s not talked about.”
Her passion for the Irish landscape is palpable. When asked about her favorite hiking spot, purcell immediately points to the Coomloughra horseshoe loop in Kerry. “It’s an experience and a half,” she says. “It’s tough though, so you’d need a mountain leader, but I love it, I get such a buzz doing it. We’re really lucky with what’s on our doorstep here. You can go for a nice 5km hike and get a lot of bang for yoru buck with the scenery. I’m focused on getting Ireland to be a big hiking destination for the rest of the world.”
While hiking books are on hold for now, Purcell’s adventurous spirit remains undimmed. “I’m done with them but I’ll keep on hiking, get the forest done, get this wedding done: sure, absolutely plenty to stress me out!”
