RTS Link: Fares, Updates & Johor Transport Plans | Malaysia-Singapore News

RTS Link Set to Begin Operations by Year’s End, Promising Economic Boost

The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is on track to commence passenger service by the end of , promising to dramatically reduce commute times and reshape the economic landscape of the region. The rail link, a bilateral project between Singapore and Malaysia, will shrink the journey between the two countries to just five minutes, a significant improvement over the often-frustrating Causeway crossing.

The RTS Link will operate via a 25-meter-high bridge connecting Woodlands North Station in Singapore to the Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru. Designed to alleviate congestion on the Causeway, the system aims to foster closer ties between the two nations and unlock shared economic and social benefits. The system is projected to handle up to 10,000 commuters per hour in each direction during peak periods.

Passengers traveling in either direction will benefit from co-located Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities. This streamlined process means travelers will clear both Singaporean and Malaysian authorities at the point of departure, eliminating the need for further immigration checks upon arrival. This feature is intended to create a seamless travel experience.

While the exact fare structure is still being finalized, estimates suggest a one-way trip could cost between RM15.50 and RM21.70 (approximately S$5 to S$7). An official announcement regarding fares is expected in the second half of .

The first train for the RTS Link has been unveiled, and the service will operate daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, catering to a wide range of commuter schedules. Construction milestones have been consistently met, including the completion of the 17.1-meter long connecting span of the marine viaduct in January , and the resumption of work on the project following a period of suspension in July .

Beyond the immediate benefits of reduced travel time, the RTS Link is expected to spur economic development in both Johor Bahru and Singapore. A recent report highlighted the potential for the RTS Link to redraw Malaysia’s economic map, fostering new investment and opportunities. The development of Coronation Square in Johor Bahru is also anticipated to redefine the city, potentially benefiting from increased connectivity provided by the new rail link.

However, some concerns have been raised regarding data security and the need for independent audits of the RTS Link’s systems. One Member of Parliament has called for such audits to ensure the protection of commuter data.

Successful implementation of the RTS Link also hinges on improvements to Johor’s “last-mile” transport infrastructure, ensuring commuters can easily access and depart from the Bukit Chagar Station. Effective integration with local bus networks and other transportation options will be crucial to maximizing the benefits of the new rail link.
