Ruf has unveiled a bespoke 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-eight engine that delivers more than 1,000 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque without any hybrid assistance, according to reports from CarBuzz, Jalopnik, and EuropeSays. Debuting at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the prototype engine—internally designated as the Erprober or “The Tester”—is currently housed in the middle of an elongated Ruf CTR3 chassis while pointing toward the German automaker’s future hypercar plans.

Engineering Beyond the Flat-Six Ceiling

Extracting four-figure power from a compact boxer engine creates severe thermal and mechanical hurdles, as increased boost raises cylinder pressures and combustion temperatures. According to EuropeSays, Porsche addresses these forces in its latest 3.6-liter flat-six hybrid setup by utilizing strengthened cast pistons, lightweight crankcases with enlarged ventilation chambers, and motorsport-derived roller cam followers to output 701 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Rather than chasing higher boost levels or adopting electric hybrid assistance, Ruf chose to add two cylinders to create a fundamentally larger combustion engine. Jalopnik noted that the new B8 engine features four combustion chambers per bank instead of three, distributing the workload across eight pistons to generate massive power with greater mechanical headroom.

Chassis Integration and Manual Transmission

The Erprober prototype sits in a modified CTR3 frame and will take on the Goodwood hillclimb’s Supercar Run with driver Tanner Foust behind the wheel, as reported by Jalopnik. Crucially, Jalopnik confirmed that Ruf paired the 1,000-horsepower flat-eight motor with a six-speed manual transmission, allowing drivers to row their own gears instead of relying solely on automated dual-clutch gearboxes. Alois Ruf addressed the significance of the project in a company press release cited by Jalopnik, stating, There are moments in a company’s history that define the future. For RUF, the Boxer 8 is one of those moments. A boxer-eight has never been part of our story, or anyone else’s in this form, so we decided to write a new chapter in automotive history. We look forward to letting the engine speak for itself at Goodwood. Jalopnik

Proprietary Architecture and Historical Precedent

The new engine utilizes a bespoke gravity-cast aluminum crankcase built entirely by Ruf rather than modifying an existing Porsche component, according to EuropeSays. This independent path marks another step in Ruf’s long-term evolution away from relying on Porsche-supplied engine blocks. Sixteen years prior, during the conclusion of the 997 generation, Ruf built the RGT-8 by fitting a modified, naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 derived from BMW’s S65 architecture into a GT3-style chassis to make 550 horsepower, as detailed by Jalopnik. With the introduction of the gravity-cast flat-eight, Ruf has moved further into proprietary manufacturing while retaining styling cues inspired by Porsche lineage.
