TOKYO, Japan – Cheslin Kolbe, the South African rugby star currently playing for Suntory Sungoliath in Japan Rugby League One, experienced a moment to forget during a match against Toyota verbitz on April 27. While Sungoliath secured a 45-28 victory, Kolbe’s error drew attention and likely stirred memories for French rugby fans.
Kolbe, known for his role in South Africa’s two World Cup wins and his previous stints with Toulouse and Toulon, found himself at the center of an unusual play. In the 26th minute, with his team leading 14-7, Kolbe crossed the try line. However, in what South African press described as an “embarrassing error,” he nonchalantly allowed the ball to slip from his grasp while attempting to ground it closer to the posts for an easier conversion.
The miscue, though not ultimately affecting the game’s outcome, provided a stark contrast to Kolbe’s crucial play during the 2023 World Cup quarterfinal. In that match, Kolbe charged down a conversion attempt by France’s Thomas ramos, a play that potentially saved two points for South Africa and contributed to France’s elimination.
Kolbe joined Suntory Sungoliath in 2023 after departing toulon. Despite the blunder, he contributed four conversions to his team’s victory.
