(Pyeongchang = Yonhap News) Reporter Yoo Hyeong-jae = Daegwallyeong, about 800 meters above sea level, is synonymous with cold in Korea.

Daegwallyeong, covered in snow, is a winter wonderland.

Although the weather warmed up, the lowest temperature in Daegwallyeong on the morning of the 28th was minus 12 degrees.

Even in such weather, a unique marathon event was held where people took off their clothes and ran naked against the Daegwallyeong cold, attracting attention.

The ‘Pyeongchang Daegwallyeong Naked Marathon 2024’ was held on this day in the Daegwallyeong area with around 600 men and women taking part.

In this competition, which includes 5km and 10km courses, men must remove their tops and women must wear sleeveless or short-sleeved t-shirts.

The heavy snow that had fallen a few days ago remained in the cold, so the whole area around the course was a world of silver.

Before leaving, some of the participants appeared to face the cold by wrapping their bodies in plastic.

But most of the marathoners were busy running around and warming up enough to brave the cold.

An elderly couple in their late 70s who met at this time boasted, “It’s a bit cold, but we’ll turn on exciting music and run together as a couple to have fun and have fun. We’ve already participated as a regular 6 or 7 times in this race alone, so we’re not worried.”

At 11 am, a gunshot announced the start, and with loud cheers, the participants ran to the Daegwallyeong area all at once.

Most of the participants wrote the names of their wives and children on their topless bodies and expressed their feelings with hearts (♥) or ‘I love you’.

There were also participants who engraved phrases such as ‘Fighting’, ‘Ironman’, or ‘Everything is going well’, or engraved the names of their workplaces, marathon clubs, or hometowns.

The participants ran on the snow-covered roads around Daegwallyeong’s famous Dry Taedeokjang, where the fierce wind blows occasionally.

The organizers said that 32 couples had competed in the 10km couple’s run, with the oldest participant being 87 years old.

Kim Dong-il and Han Gyeong-ae, a couple from North Chungcheong Province, said, “It’s been 7 to 8 years since I ran a marathon, but this is my first time participating in the Daegwallyeong Naked Marathon. It was a little cold. , but the snow was piled up and it was a beautiful sight that I couldn’t see anywhere else, so I enjoyed running.” .
