DENVER, Colo. – The Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team concluded its season on Sunday, losing 3-0 to No. 3 Denver in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
The match started slowly with no goals in the first 18 minutes. Denver changed the game with three goals in six minutes. Ben Smith scored the first goal, followed by Keegan Kelly and Trevor Wright, who scored from set pieces.
In the second half, Gardner-Webb played more aggressively. Junior forward Elias Khodri had the first shot on goal for Gardner-Webb in the 50th minute, but Denver’s goalkeeper, Issac Nehme, made a save.
Junior goalkeeper Alan Horrocks kept Gardner-Webb in the game with several crucial saves, including a standout save in the 58th minute against Sam Bassett’s shot.
Max Fisher had Gardner-Webb’s best chance to score just past the hour mark, but his shot from a corner kick was also saved by Nehme. This was the last real chance for Gardner-Webb as they wrapped up their record-setting season.
