Rupert Grint Hit with $2.3 Million Tax Bill
Harry Potter Star Rupert Grint Hit with $2.3 Million Tax Bill
Actor’s residuals Deemed Taxable Income
Rupert Grint, beloved for his portrayal of ron Weasley in the iconic “Harry potter” film franchise, is facing a hefty tax bill of $2.3 million. The U.K.’s tax agency, H.M. Revenue and Customs (HMRC),issued the bill following a review of Grint’s tax return from seven years ago.
The agency steadfast that Grint incorrectly classified £4.5 million (approximately $5.7 million) in residuals from the “Harry Potter” films as a capital asset rather than income.Capital assets are typically taxed at a lower rate than income.
Grint’s legal team challenged the HMRC’s decision, but a tribunal judge ruled against the actor. Judge Harriet Morgan stated that the residuals were rightfully classified as income as they were primarily derived from Grint’s acting work in the “Harry Potter” films.
This isn’t the first time Grint has faced tax-related legal issues. in 2019,he lost a separate legal battle over a £1 million (approximately $1.3 million) tax refund.
Grint, now 36, starred in all eight “Harry Potter” films from 2001 to 2011, earning an estimated £24 million (approximately $30 million) for his role as the loyal best friend to Harry Potter.
