Russell P5 Belgian GP: Mercedes Needs to Revert to Previous Setup
Russell Calls for Return to Earlier Season Form as Team Grapples with Pace Decline
George Russell has voiced his frustration and concern over his team’s recent loss of pace, suggesting a return to earlier season car specifications might be necessary to regain competitiveness. The British driver, who secured a fifth-place finish that he felt flattered the car’s true performance, highlighted a important step backward following a change in growth direction a couple of months ago.
“We need to understand why we’ve lost so much pace in recent races,” Russell stated. “Of course it’s frustrating for all of us as a team,P5 was probably flattering the real pace of the car so I’m at least happy we got the maximum possible.”
He elaborated on the team’s recent struggles, pinpointing a strategic shift as the likely culprit. “We made a clear change of direction a couple of months ago and I think since that point we’ve taken a step backwards.” Russell believes that while it can take time to diagnose such issues, the current performance trend indicates a need to re-evaluate their development path. “Sometimes it takes a few races to understand what the real reasons are for that lack of pace but clearly it seems like we need to revert back to what we had earlier in the season.”
Antonelli’s Challenging Weekend Underscores Need for Qualifying Betterment
Meanwhile, teammate some Antonelli endured a challenging weekend, struggling to advance beyond the first stage of qualifying for both the Sprint and the Grand Prix. Despite starting from the pit lane after set-up adjustments, including the fitting of a new front wing designed to enhance downforce, the young Italian finished 16th after two pit stops.
Antonelli expressed a newfound confidence in the car, particularly with the updated front wing. ”Today I had more confidence in the car, definitely with the new wing I had more stability and that was helping,” he commented. ”Also the car felt more connected so definitely took some confidence back and now is time to really try and work for Qualifying because when you start at the front is wholly another story.”
Looking ahead, Antonelli emphasized the critical importance of qualifying performance, especially for upcoming circuits where overtaking is notoriously difficult. “Especially for Budapest where it’s even harder to overtake to really do a good Qualifying and start at the front,” he concluded, highlighting the team’s focus on improving their starting grid positions.
