Russian Couple Spied for Ukraine, Fled after Arrest
Updated May 25, 2025
Sergei and Tatyana voronkov, long critical of Vladimir Putin’s regime, decided to leave Russia shortly after
Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. The couple relocated to Ukraine, Tatyana’s birthplace, and eventually
settled in Novolyubymivka, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, in 2019. They sought a peaceful life, raising
livestock and working as a land surveyor. However, their tranquility was shattered when Russia launched its full-scale
invasion of Ukraine in february 2022.

to Ukraine
The couple soon found themselves in occupied territory and made the decision to become informants for Ukraine.
Tatyana, 52, recalled the initial shock of the invasion: “I heard something whistling, something flying, and I
went outside. A rocket was flying right over the house… I went on the internet to see what had happened and
they wrote that Kyiv had already been bombed.”
When a Russian convoy first passed their home, Tatyana contacted an acquaintance in Kyiv believed to have
connections with Ukraine’s security services. This contact provided a Telegram chatbot link, leading to
communication with a person who requested details on Russian electronic warfare systems and military hardware,
particularly missile systems and tanks. The information would assist the Ukrainian army in targeting Russian
troops using drones and artillery. For two years, Sergei gathered coordinates, and Tatyana transmitted them,
carefully erasing all traces afterward, relying on the village’s intermittent internet access.

Tatyana defended their actions, stating, “We didn’t think of it as treason. Nobody attacked Russia. this was a
fight against evil.”
Their operation ended abruptly in April 2024 when Sergei, 55, was detained while buying gardening seeds. This
led to their escape into Europe, followed by a thank-you letter from the Ukrainian army.
What’s next
