As Russia grapples with internal conflicts following a recent uprising by the notorious mercenary company Wagner Group, a notable incident emerged on the 26th (local time): a Russian fighter jet aggressively approached a British military aircraft.

The Russian Ministry of Defense addressed the incident in a statement released on the same day, confirming the interception of three objects approaching Russian airspace over the Black Sea. Two Sukhoi-27 fighter jets quickly scrambled to counter this airborne intrusion swiftly. The ministry clarified that one of the trespassing objects was identified as a Royal Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, accompanied by two Typhoon fighter jets.

It appears that Russia’s response to aircraft belonging to countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been escalating since the war in Ukraine. Whenever NATO aircraft, including those traversing the Black and Baltic seas, enter Russian airspace, Russia dispatches emergency fighter jets and conducts threatening flights. In a concerning incident in March, a Russian Sukhoi-27 fighter jet collided with a US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drone, causing the drone to crash.
